Each Valentine's Day morning for the past 28 years, Portlanders have awakened to find their fair city festooned with Valentine hearts, both large and small. This year, Portland's (soon to be new) Public Library was one of the Valentine Phantom's targets.

Our "lobster cruise" took us right up close to the Portland Headlight. What a beautiful scene, even in th fog that started to roll in. WVJazzman on Flickr: Posted a Photo
Portland has a busy harbor with lots of ocean going vessels of all sizes. While framing up a shot of the bow and dropped anchor on this one, a three-mast schooner passed behind in the fog. WVJazzman on Flickr: Posted a Photo
One more shot of the Portland Headlight. I really liked the light hitting the rocks. WVJazzman on Flickr: Posted a Photo
One of our favorite outings while in Portland (ME) was a Lobster Cruise on the Luck Catch. The owner and his two assistants take a group of about a dozen passengers out to pull traps. We went to four locations, pulling two traps each time. The kids get involved (and adults too) in baiting the traps, emptying the traps out of crabs, measuring any lobsters, etc. The four stops each had a different style of trap also... very interesting!! Quite often the lobster traps come up with as many or more crabs than lobsters. This female was full of eggs. We threw her back to the sea also.

Mike, the owner of the Lucky Catch, demonstrates how to measure any lobsters caught in the trap. The "back" shell (before it becomes segmented) has to be a certain length to keep it. Otherwise, you must throw it back to grow so more. Also, if you catch a female "keeper" you must throw her back also so she can continue to breed. (Note: there are ways to tell male from female, but a notch in the tail fans put there by a previous lobsterman is the most obvious.) WVJazzman on Flickr: Posted a Photo
Our Lobster Cruise netted two keeper male lobsters. In a miscommunication between my wife and I, we missed out buying the catch at below market rates. But we still enjoyed a lobster lunch at the Portland Lobster Company right next door to the pier where Lucky Catch is based.
For the best New England-style clam chowder in Portland, go to Gilbert's Chowder House. A hint of bacon adds to the delicious flavor.

The previous afternoon had been rainy (the only bad weather on the entire trip), but I scouted out the locale to return the next morning. Arriving before sunrise, I watched as the color palette changed rapidly. I don't think you can take a bad photo of this lighthouse and its wonderful situation by the sea. These are a few of my favorites.
